Start the year with Tribes TLC in your classroom
By Mary Palin · August 1, 2009
It’s August and it’s back to school!
The first two weeks of school is a critical time period – whatever happens tends to become the norm for behavior, procedure, expectations, and policy. The time spent on personalizing your classroom and the people in it, during the first two weeks of school can have a huge effect on the way the quarter, trimester, semester, or year plays out.
Facilitating how your students learn names, understand and practice the agreements, are expected to behave, and get into groups for various tasks…what you do in the first two weeks will either make this an ongoing struggle, or time well spent.
Visit the Forum for some grade level/age specific suggestions for Tribes strategies and energizers.
We encourage you to share your own suggestions, success stories, adaptations, and concerns, so we can continue to build and support our professional learning community online.
Page numbers and titles are from these Tribes books and the Energizer Box:

Got something to say?

Is there any where I can find some suggestions or plans for the first few weeks of school. I know the responsive classroom and have started to learn about tribes from a friend who uses tribes in her classroom and I have agreed to start the first few weeks in her class since she is out with a family emergency. I want to be sure to get the class off on the right foot and would like to use Tribes since that is what she uses. But only have two days to prep. ANyone have any suggestions for where to begin and what to do the first few weeks. I want to get the kids off to a great start and know it will be hard since their teacher is not able to be here. HELP! Thanks in advance! Christine
Hi Christine,
Have you checked out the forum page of the website – there are a number of suggestions and ideas there for “getting started”. Beyond that, let me know what, specifically, I can help you with. What age group, etc. Hope you have a Tribes book as a resource?!
